Geneva, Lucerne, Lugano, Thun, Brienz… Discover the most beautiful lakes in Switzerland, where to see them, what to do and how to enjoy them through the seasons.

Switzerland has over 1,500 lakes, from large bodies of water lined with lively cities to deep-blue mountain lakes. This guide presents the most beautiful lakes in Switzerland, their highlights and the activities to enjoy, from boating and swimming to walking along the shores.

The most beautiful lakes at a glance

The most beautiful lakes in Switzerland: the complete guide
  • Lake Geneva: the largest lake in Western Europe, between Geneva, Lausanne and Montreux.
  • Lake Lucerne: deeply indented and ringed by mountains.
  • Lake Lugano: a Mediterranean feel in the south, in Ticino.
  • Lake Thun and Lake Brienz: turquoise waters around Interlaken.
  • Lake Zurich: urban and accessible, ideal for a swim in the city.

Lake Geneva

At 580 km² shared between Switzerland and France, Lake Geneva is the largest Alpine lake. Along the northern shore lie Geneva and its water jet, the terraced Lavaux vineyards (UNESCO-listed), Lausanne and Montreux with Chillon Castle. It is sailed by the CGN fleet, including historic paddle steamers.

Lake Lucerne

In the heart of central Switzerland, this many-armed lake offers spectacular views of Pilatus and Rigi. From Lucerne, cruises lead to the foot of the mountains, which you climb by cogwheel train or cable car for a sweeping view over the water.

Lake Lugano

South of the Alps, Lake Lugano basks in Mediterranean light, among palm trees and hilltop villages. Lugano and Morcote are among the prettiest stops, with lakeside promenades and the ascent of Monte San Salvatore.

Lake Thun and Lake Brienz

Flanking Interlaken, these two turquoise lakes are fed by the glaciers of the Bernese Oberland. The wilder Lake Brienz is striking for its intense colour; Lake Thun offers castles and picturesque villages along its shores.

What to do by the lakes?

  • Cruises: most large lakes have regular boat lines.
  • Swimming: beaches and public baths (the famous Badi) in summer.
  • Hiking and cycling: trails and routes often run along the shores.
  • Food: lake fish (perch, whitefish) served in waterside restaurants.

When to visit the Swiss lakes?

Summer (June to September) is the best time for swimming and water sports. Spring and autumn offer beautiful scenery and quieter shores. In winter, the lakes take on a mineral beauty, often fringed by snow-capped mountains.
